Dumbest Thing You've Done This Week

After a torrential rain last week and some flooding of the basement of the old Post Office I was going to move the de-humidifier to another area to do work. It was plugged into an outlet about nine feet off of the floor. The appliance was plugged into a three-foot long junction box/extension, because the de-humidifier has a six-foot power cord. Most all of the plugs here at the P.O. are either in the floor (literally), or 9 feet up a wall or column.

Instead of going to get a stool or a step-ladder I thought to myself, "Self, just grab that cord and snatch it deftly out of the wall and catch the box when it comes down." Best laid plans of mice and men and all. So, I did that.

When I yanked back on the appliance cord that four-way junction box separated from the 3-prong plug, flipped end over end and caught me between my upper lip and nose. Hilarity ensued. Cue the Benny Hill Chase music . Been a long time since I've had a bloody nose.

Of course I spun around like you always do whenever you've done something amazingly stupid, even though I was completely alone. I fully expected Zeke to be sitting there with some sort of editorial comment.....

I have this stack of snapshots that lives on the top of my microwave. There are all sorts of pictures. Past cats, current cats. Motorcycle rides with friends. Cool dogs that I've known or met. The woman. Family.

Whenever I'm in that down mode I'll pick up that stack of prints and just thumb through it. After that, all is better in my world. It's way cheaper than therapy. And drugs.....

It's homecoming night here in the big Dick-son. A bit after dark I fired up the coals and roasted a couple ears of corn and grilled some chicken whilst listening to the Dickson County High School football game from across the way. The stadium is about a half mile away as the crow flies, and I was able to recognize half-time due to the music breaks.

I also recognized the end of the game when the band played the Alma-mater and there was a sing-along and a big cheer after that.

A few minutes after the Alma-mater, while having a bite of dinner on the loading dock, I listened to the roar and rubber squealing of pick-up trucks and sub-compact racers leaving the high-school grounds. Some major teen testosterone. Soon after that those same vehicles were bombing about down-town here.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I was that kid. But, what I'm hoping is that after the overnight hours leading into Saturday morning, I don't see that news story about that horrifying tragedy of a crash that kills two or three or four students just after their high-school homecoming game.

All car designers have always had their own ideas about body-work, and I have always thought that about car fenders specifically. From the time that I was a kid I always thought that it was very sexual in nature. I mean, how can you look at a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa and not think of someone like Sophia Loren? Seriously.

So, over the next few days we are going to have a run of gorgeous hips from the car show last week-end at the O'more School of Design in Franklin that Sam and I attended. It's a great venue for a car show, what a beautiful campus.

If you'd like to try a guess in the comments as to what each image of the car with hips is, that might be fun. But I can't promise any real prizes here, 'cause the Skate Truck isn't really very well sponsored. Prizes could maybe be a cold beverage for a correct guess when I see you, or perhaps a light snack, or a used fishing lure, or maybe a hale and hearty hand-shake of congratulatory nature, just depending on who the guess-ee might be.....

So, we'll start here with a really easy one, everyone should get this one. If we were really talking sexual, these hips would be a Mae West sort of BBW.

The 450 A class literally explodes out of the starting gate at the 30th annual Loretta Lynn's Amateur Nationals yesterday. What a glorious noise, fourty-four four-strokers unleashed at the same time. Sam and I just walked around grinning and soaking up the atmosphere that is just being somewhere that racing is going on.

On a far more suck-ass motorcycling note, R.I.P. Gary Nixon . According to SOUP he passed away yesterday in Baltimore at age seventy due to a heart attack. An iconic racer and personality, he will be sorely missed. My absolute favorite picture of Gary Nixon is here . Godspeed Gary.....

Bird on a Wire

Some folks have recurring visitors that are a bit more exotic than the ones at my house. But, we generally hatch about three batches of doves a season at the old post office, so that's cool.

This particular bird was keeping an eye on Zeke and I on Sunday while we were hanging out on the back dock. The other dove was on the nest warming the eggs I suppose. The bird on a wire was very calm, so calm that I was able to walk inside and get the camera. It sat for it's portrait for me for over fifteen minutes. He (she?) even allowed me to kneel within about 3 feet while I shot a few pictures. I had no idea about the sky blue ring around a dove eye, did you? Gorgeous.

Quote of the Weekend (QOTW!) for the trials at Owensville, Missouri comes from our good buddy Speck.

Speck rode well enough on Saturday to post his first ever win in the ITSA Modern Twin-shock class, the toughest twin-shock trials class around. He rode his ass off and was justified in being proud of his day.

Speck, towards the end of the third loop though was feeling a bit toasted. He stumbled through a particularly tough ITSA "A" section and got out, and then announced that he was wore out. Fearless told him, "Really? Damn, I'm just now starting to get my second wind."

To which Speck replied, "Well, how about your taking your second wind and blow me!"

This last Sunday past, I rode around my adopted home-town for about an hour. Went from city-park to city-park, and from play-ground to play-ground. You see, I got me a new basketball a couple months ago, and it being March Madness and all I wanted to go and stretch the old muscles and shoot a bit of round ball (more to come about my new ball later).

Yep, I hit all the city-parks and public-playgrounds, even a few school-yards around town. All of the public play-grounds and school-yards had baseball fields, slides and swings and monkey bars, etc. A few even had volleyball courts, but NO basketball goals. The city-parks on the other hand had all of the aforementioned. But, if there was a basketball goal on the grounds they were locked up tighter than a drum with a sign stating that a reservation was required to utilize those facilities. A reservation was required to shoot some hoops? What the hell?

For a couple of days that kind of stressed my little brain a bit, and I asked a couple of buddies about it. They both had what I think might be the correct answer as to why no basketball goals, or at least why only locked up basketball goals. Drugs. Don't that sound crazy?

Yeah, drugs. And just to boil it down a bit, think for a second about the thug-ass culture that has permeated the NBA over the past twenty years. And that's a sad commentary, if in fact it is true. But the longer I think about, I know that they're right. Ugh.

A Fender Telecaster is just so damned basic that it's hard to say "What to look for in a Tele?" when asked. A buddy who plays a bit asked me this last summer. He has a thirteen-year-old son who had summer grass-cutting money in hand and was on the hunt. Alas, the young gent was thwarted in his guitar purchase by his uncontrollable puberty testosterone levels. He was dead set on an SG model Gibson, and that's where he went, money in hand. Not too long after that, he wasn't too happy with his axe. Happens all the time.

I too, was that kid back in the day. I considered a Telecaster a toy guitar. Seriously, if it didn't have two humbuckers, what the heck was it good for. My good buddy Brian was kind enough to point me in the right direction a couple of decades ago. I'll die with my current Tele.

But, what to look for really comes down to the fact the the Telecaster is the ultimate guitar for anyone with a bent for any guitar hot-rodding. All you really need is a flat-head screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, and a soldering iron. With these tools an incredible tonal sonic palate is available at your finger-tips.

But ultimately in a Tele, it all comes down to language skills after all. And so the question really becomes, does the Tele speak the language of swamp, the language of spank. Some proponents of that tongue include Joe Walsh, Albert Collins, Beck (no, the real one), Muddy Waters, Tom Petty, Prince, Jeff Buckley, Chrissie Hynde, et all, and the list is far too long to continue with, but hopefully you get the picture.....the linguistics of tone.

Aunt Bobbie G's Jalapeno Cornbread

Ingredients:

1-1/4 cup self-rising yellow corn meal

1 cup vegetable oil (or Crisco)

4 eggs

8 oz. sour cream

8 oz. sweet-cream corn

1 jalapeno pepper after dicing, or to taste. The real heat from the jalapeno pepper is in the membrane and the seeds. For medium heat, use half of the seeds and half the membrane of one pepper. For more intense heat use the whole pepper.

Cooking Instructions:

Preheat a black cast-iron skillet with the vegetable oil in it to 400 degrees.

In a mixing bowl stir all other ingredients together. Use a fork, not a whisk. According to Aunt Bobbie, you're not making a souffle or a cake here, so whipping in air is not necessary. Only blend the ingredients until the cornmeal is no longer dry and the egg yolks are broken.

When the skillet is preheated, pour half of the oil from the skillet into the cornbread mixture and stir it in. Again, blend only as little as possible to incorporate all the ingredients.

Using a Rubbermaid type spatula, scrape the blended cornbread mixture into the skillet and then bake at 400 degrees for approximately 20 minutes, or until the cornbread browns along the outer edges.

At this point you can turn the broiler on high, so as to brown the top of the corn-pone. DO NOT walk away from the oven during this last step, as at this temperature with the broiler on only a minute or so of non-attention will result in a burned corn-pone.

The wicked weather that we've been enduring here in the Mid-Tenn basin thankfully took a turn for the better in the last couple of days. With a high temp of fifty-five degrees and some partly cloudy skies Mikey P, the Guru and I took the advantage and got to spend a couple of hours this afternoon in the woods on our trials bikes. We spoke to the Trials-rooster prior to heading out and he kindly wished us a fall in the creek, cranky little so-and-so.....

It's really eye-opening to ride in the woods during this time of year. The foliage is so sparse that you can see ditches and rock gardens that you normally would just ride past because of them being so obscured. We found at least three new areas that will be sections for ITSA trials in twenty-eleven.

The Guru showed me a couple of lines that I had screwed up during the trials and the traction was great this afternoon. It was great to get out there and dust off the cob-webs, stretch the old leg muscles and let the brain have not nary a thought but riding. Glory.

This just in from the Trialsrooster , who obviously had a bit of excitement on the job yesterday.....

"First off this really happened yesterday, I couldn't make this shit up. The shop I work in is the front most building of three. Yesterday I was back in my little corner of the world when the lights blinked a couple times. Thinking it was just a plug loose we checked that when the lights went out through the whole shop. At that point I started to walk to the front when I saw one of the guys running to the back building with 2 fire extinguishers. I'm kinda' thinking at this point WTF! So I grab an extinguisher too, and head out the door. As soon as I get outside I hear the unmistakable sound of very high voltage in a dead short.

In the breaker box of the rear building was a very bright arc along with a little bit of fire. By the way, don't shoot a fire extinguisher into a shorted breaker box, it makes the electrons very angry. I already knew this, but they got fire to shoot all the way across the room before they figured that out. It seems the asshole had a stripped screw in the breaker box and decided to drill it out. What he succeeded in doing was drilling into the electrical feed from the pole and grounding it out, he lived but suffered some burns. The fire department and electric company were not real happy.

The good part is I got to go home early."

I had started writing a post about the fact that Woody had made it through September and we celebrated his twenty-first birthday a couple weeks ago. In the past six months though he had become deaf as a stone. He was still quite talkative, same tone as ever. He wasn't plaintive, just a bit slower in cadence perhaps. But, that classy cat chassis had a bunch of miles on it.

Over the week-end Woodrow took sight into the nether-land and then launched himself from this mortal plane. Gone.

In cat years vs. human years he wound up at one-hundred and one years. That's a pretty good number, if you ask me. I would have liked a couple or few more though.....

I couldn't really tell what caliber this is. I'm guessing the same caliber as the round serving as the key-ring fob.

Wouldn't it be interesting that if you pulled that set-screw off of the back of the front stock, then pulled the whole assembly barrel first off the shaft of the tranny and loaded your key-fob round that you'd have a working heater! Kinda' like a Barney Fife rat rod shifter.

After the rat-rod (r.r.) show this past Saturday I was talking to a friend and mentioned that I'd found myself intrigued with the creative ways that r.r. guy's (and girl's too) topped off their shifters in their rods (no pun intended. Really). Didn't matter whether they were column or stick-shifts. Some very fun stuff, questionable welding.

My friend didn't even take a breath, she said "Shifters, yeah phallic symbols." Bam, I had been psych couched in the length of time it takes a top-fuel guy to side-step the clutch. She's such a nut.

Emblem Ambivalence

Ambivalence, a noun , the definition as per the Webster Encyclopedic Dictionary of The English Language...

"Co-resistant of contradictory feelings about a particular person, object, or action."

This rat-rod had several marque badges attached to it. Pontiac, Nash (and no, that does not stand for Fearless) and another badge that Sam and I can't remember. It was a very ambivalent car as to it's true lineage. On the plus side, I think styling wise that this car could just as easily have been labeled with G A R or Chris Craft (look 'em up, seriously) marine emblems. Suicide doors on today's rod too kids, classy, but subdued. Well turned out. Style.

This vehicle's personnel area's were split by two distinct cockpits. They both had their own windshields, some shared controls, and complete gauge clusters, on their separate dashes.

According to Sam, "Two cars worth of dashboards, that's a way cool car."

Light Poles and Fire Hydrants

I have a buddy that had the unfortunate circumstance to take out an NES (Nash-Vegas Electric Service) light pole a year or so ago with his Jeep Cherokee. They, NES, magnanimously (ha) set him up an account whereby he he can pay them in monthly installments for the replacement of said light pole. Light poles, by the way, are pretty damned expensive! He said that now he kind of feels like it's his light pole. Said he might like to put a plaque on it that says, "This Light Pole Compliments of So and So". Interesting, what?

In talking with our buddy Peter D. a couple days ago he told me about a crazy uncle of his that owns three (!) fire hydrants in Worcester, Mass. Yep, he killed 3 fire hydrants. He killed two of them with a Hudson Hornet, the other with a Ford Galaxy 500.

And, I'm sure with lead-sleds like that them fire hydrants were well and truly killed.

Cruised over to the Nissan headquarters in Franklin on Saturday to check out the National Z Car Show. Not really much for one marque shows (unless they're Mustangs!), but this was a bit more interesting than I had thought it would be. There was an amazing amount of cars, many from Canada, California, Maine, you name it. They estimated over four-hundred, and I'd hasten to say there were probably many more than that. Not many trailer queens at all, literally only a hand-full.

There were extremely un-restored stockers, street modifieds, Z cars with small block Fords or Chevys stuffed in them, and many for real race cars. There was the 1994 300ZX that raced at Le Mans.

This particular Z here is serial number 0013. It is the first ever Z car to set tire in the U.S.A. in 1969. It had disappeared for over thirty years and resurfaced in storage in Connecticut last year. Pretty amazing.

I almost hate going to shows like this, because it always gets the wheels to rolling in my feebed out brain, wondering if I might need a project, you know?

Headed south-west down the Natchez Trace Parkway to Amber Falls Winery in Hampshire to see my buddy Brian play a bit of jazz with his group The Kelly Harper Jazz Group last Saturday. It's a pretty darn cool place and they have a couple of wines that are quite tasty.

Also enjoying the music, and a bunch of the product from Amber Falls, was a group of about a dozen ladies having a bachlorette party. The party was for Brittney Nichole, and that's her there in the picture with the headgear on, with Brian tossing her the side-eye while trying to find the right key. This group of ladies was having a grand old time, and during one of the sets they asked if the band knew "Strawberry Wine". The band admitted that they didn't, but if Brittney and her best girlfriend wanted to come on up and sing it, well then they would definitely fall in and make a go of it.

And, make a go of it they did. The ladies acquitted themselves well, sang pretty good harmony, and they remembered all of the words. The band had no trouble finding the groove for a four-four country tune with only a couple of chords so it was all good.

Here's to Brittney and her new road of marriage and life in a couple of weeks. Cheers girl, and Good Luck!

The past few years out at The Ranch have been kind of grim, green wise. What with the drought conditions of many summers and the late, late freeze of a couple years ago, the woods even in August still seemed to be trying to get caught up.

Not so this year, the greenery is out in abundance, and the loop is a joy to ride around on. The woods are thick and you can't see through them very far at all. It's almost as if you can actually smell the extra oxygen in the air.....very cool, that.

What we've got roasting on the fire there is a few hot dogs, some beer brats, burgers, and on the far right a monster smoked baloney steak, over a half inch thick. It might not sound good, but I've got to say that it was great! And it was big enough that everybody got a bite.

That Fearless has really got it going on in the gourmet dining department.

Okay, here's the scam. Zip is a tennis ball chasing fool. Take him out in six inches of snow and start throwing snowballs and it just gets stupider from there. He is a complete mad-man. You make a snowball and throw it and he goes after it, it hits the ground, disappears. He roots around for a bit and then he's just full blown confused.

But, get his attention and he sees that you're making another snowball and he runs right back ready to do it all over again and again. Just like the Energizer bunny.....

This is a belated Happy Birthday to my faithful cat buddy Woody. Woody turned twenty last month. Yep, twenty. He was named after Woody Guthrie, of course. His older brother was named after Arlo Guthrie, who we got a day or two after seeing Arlo perform. It was just a foregone conclusion that Woody would be Woody. He has been called by many a moniker, The aforementioned Woodmeister, The Woodster, The Woodboy, Woodrow Bolinski, The Woodman, Woodycat, Trailer Trash, and Bitch.

And, Woody really is trailer trash. Me and the woman got Wood from a trailer park that was off of Sawyer Brown Road on the property where the Bellevue Mall is. A friend of hers had a litter that they were trying to thin out. When we went into the trailer all the kittens were milling about and doing the kitten thing. All except one, and he was sitting on the top of a recliner intently watching pro-wrestling on the television. "That's the one we want right there" we said almost in unison, laughing.

Woody lives with Devil Cat Zeke (yep, the fourteen pounder). Actually, I should say that he tolerates the presence of Zeke in our territory. Wood's not as quick as he once was, not as hefty, and nor is he as patient. But boy is he a crotchety old bastard.

The drama usually starts during morning coffee while I'm checking e-mails and the weather, when Woody strolls up to Zeke and thrusts his forehead into the vicinity of Zeke's mouth. The general premise of this being, wash my face you bitch, and don't forget the ears. Zeke will do this for a minute or two, then he'll stop and stick his forehead out for similar treatment. Woody don't have none of that, he just extends and places a fore paw between Zeke's eyeballs and does this goofy moewll/growl thing. Then they do this Mexican stand-off for a bit, and then it's on.....

Zeke reciprocates with the same fore paw move, and then, being the bulldozer that he is he'll bowl Woody right over. They cruise and squirm around for a minute or two like that, and get in a couple of rounds of boxing. Then Zeke inevitably gets pissed, lays them ears back and wants to go for real.

Bad move Big Boy. Zeke has not gotten a handle on that term about old age and treachery. It doesn't matter that Woodrow is sixteen years his senior and nine pounds lighter. I think The Woodmeister may have an advantage in that he was an indoor and outside cat for the first four years of his life. I think that makes a difference, because when Woody decides that they're done with the fisticuffs, then they're by-god done with the fisticuffs. He has a way of going all Tasmanian devil and it always seems to surprise Zeke. The fur will fly and then Woody will chase him downstairs and Zeke has to run for cover. Woody will show back up in a couple minutes and let me pet him for a bit, and then he'll continue his morning bath on his own.

Happy Belated Birthday Woody, I sure hope there's many more.....you're a hoot.

Praying Mantis Dejavu Redux

I haven't personally seen a praying mantis in over ten years, that I can remember. Now, in less than a week I've seen two.

I wondered aloud if it was because we've been smart enough over the past twenty years to learn something about the poisons (DDT, etc.) that we subject mother earth and mother nature to, and that we might possibly be using a brain cell or three.

I used to keep praying mantis as pets in my room when I was a kid, much to my mom's delight. Not. I kept a few for as long as a couple summer months before giving them their freedom back. Had one particular mantis that would just sit in my hand and look at me. Trippy shit for a 10/11 year-old, to be sure.

Granted the one from last week was a monster female, and gorgeous, longer than from the end of my middle finger to my wrist, a half an inch past the palm. One of the largest I'd ever encountered. But this guy here was cool too. And, it was a treat to see the both of them.....

For ten years from the mid-eighties through the early nineties the IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) was one of the strongest, highly entertaining sports car racing series in the world. It was also one of the most competitive from a manufacturer's standpoint with the GTP class (Grand Touring Prototype) boasting a lineup consisting of teams representing Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Chevrolet, Jaguar, Porsche, Lola, Ford, and even Buick.

During practice or qualifying for the Twenty-Four Hours of Daytona Sam and I liked to stand on the outside of the International Horseshoe . The GTP cars would bomb around the NASCRAP banking from the back straight chicane full tilt at well over 200 mph. Then they'd shut it down take the left at turn one in probably second gear and make the run towards the Horseshoe, straight at us. On the short chute from turn one they'd reach probably 140 mph in the blink of an eye. But the real eye-opener was the exit of the Horseshoe.

Once the corner was squared off and they were banging through the gearbox (with the twin turbochargers skittering and screeching crazily) toward the infield kink, the GTP cars would go away from you so quickly that your eyes would not be able to focus on them. They'd seriously outrun your eyeballs ability to freaking keep up with them. Especially the Number 83 Nissan. It was amazing.

This particular example is owned by the Nissan Corp. and is currently on display at The Lane Motor Museum with several other important Nissan racing machines. Alas, it is only a replicated mock-up. Trust me, I crawled under it.....

But, if you'd like to be better acquainted with old Number 83 I happen to know that she has been completely restored and is for sale HERE for a cool $895,000 USD. Boy that would make a helluva Christmas in July present, wouldn't it?

Strange Call

So, I've got a couple of extra passes to the NAMM Show at the convention center in Nash-Vegas for Sunday. On Saturday evening I call my buddy Stevie's cell to see if maybe he'd like to use one. He got me a pass last year and I thought I'd repay the favor.

A lady answers the phone and proceeds to give me quite a bit of the third degree. Strange. "Who IS this?" A lady answering his phone was the first red flag, since he was several years divorced, and as far as I know didn't have a steady enough lady that would be answering his cell.

"Well, this is Pee Wee calling for Stevie."

"For who?" she says, hostile as hell.

"For Stevie, er, ah, Mark (none of his folks call him Stevie, only people that ever worked with him). I'm a friend of his."

"Mark's dead" she states flatly.

Duhhhh......Stunned silence on my end. My mind is going "What? What? Mayday!". "Are you still there?" she asks. Insert Verizon guy, "Can you hear me now?" She has to say it a couple or three times.

I'm not sure I am here, I'm thinking. "Yeah, I guess I am here." I say blindly.

She, "We found him on July twelfth, he'd been dead since the first." Again she asks, "Who IS this?" My brain is barely able at this point to produce a coherent sentence (yeah, I know, what's different about that). "Uh, my names Pee Wee, I worked with him for years at Q.I." I'm stammering at this point. That seemed to settle her a bit. Turns out I was talking to Stevie's sister-in-law.

"Well his brother, my husband, found him on the 12th. He was laid back in his recliner with the television blasting and the T.V. remote control on his chest. He smelled pretty bad."

Great. Now, I don't know about you, but that last bit of info I could have done without. The images I already had going on in my day-mare video mind were pretty wild.

"We buried him on Thursday the sixteenth. We're still waiting on the toxicology reports."

As of now I have no idea how I got off the phone with her, or of any of the rest of our conversation. She told me her name but I do not have a clue as to what it was.

Now, it's 3 days later as I type-peck this into the computer. I'm still kind of numb. I think about it out of the blue during the day and it kind of stops me in my tracks. Stevie was five years my junior. He was a funny as hell guy, a disc-jockey that always had a zinger at the ready, with an infectious laugh. I truly hate that kind of shit that makes me have to think of my own mortality.

But, I will tell you this. Enjoy what you do. Enjoy your folks, your pets, your friends and your family. And, you're only only gonna' get one fucking shot to do these things, and to tell them how you feel about them. You better do it. Now.

Majesty Update.....

The Majesty and the Guru must have worked pretty well together on Saturday, upholding ITSA honor, and scoring a podium finish at the AMA NATC National at TTC on a bike that has literally only been alive for about twenty hours. He finished third behind Larry Holbert in 1st place and Sheldon Hefler, who took the 2nd position. I asked the Guru about points and he didn't have a clue, he said "Dude, I had lots!"

The Guru also said that the motor, flywheel and jetting were spot on, the only question marks being a bit of a grabby clutch and a little too soft suspension at both ends for the bigger obstacles. But, tomorrow is another day!

They rode twelve sections per loop, a total of three loops, a total of thirty-six sections. He said they were quite technical, and more than a little steep!

Hopefully I can have some info after the Trials tomorrow (Sunday).

The Guru's Majesty 290 Yamaha

It sure is pretty, and it's lean at a little less than one-hundred ninety
pounds. Sorry for the shitty pictures. We just had time enough to prop it against a tree and shoot a few pics. It has been a major thrash, built from scratch in about ten days. Nothing fit, nothing worked, and I mean nothing. Everything had to be fabricated or modified. We were literally wrenching on it until we closed the trailer doors and the Guru hit the road.

It is however the turning-est damn thing I've ever ridden, short of a current modern bike. And, that 290 big-bore Yamaha with a fly-wheel weight feels like it'd throw you right up the mountain just fine, thank you very much. But man, does it ever turn. Glory. I only got to cruise it a bit on a couple embankments though, can't wait to ride it in some sections proper.

I'd like to say Thanks to the Trialsrooster for his absolutely fabulous fab

Belated Mother's Day

Sam's idea of lawn care is a big bottle of Round Up weed killer. He's like Dirty Harry and his S&W .44 Magnum with the stuff. He figures if it grows he's got to cut it, so it may as well not grow.....

My Mom passed away in the early nineties, many many years too damned early. Every year she had a stand of beautiful purple Iris's that she tended. They surrounded the walkway to the porch and up the steps from the drive. They were always a kind of signal to me that it really was gosh-darn-it spring time.

Back to Sam. Since she passed this stand of flowers has been driven over, parked on with the motor-home for months at a time, Round Upped, weed-eated, trod upon and any number of other things you can think of. Now, not out of any disrespect from Sam mind you, but that's just the home and garden thing that Sam has going on.

But, every spring those Iris pop gorgeous. Just like my Mom Joan in her major head-strong, 100% honest way, there they are!

And to me, my memories of her are way more there with those flowers than over at the cemetery.....

Br'er Rabbit

We've got a pair of rabbits hanging around the shop @ B&J Racing. They have been bounding around the yard and eye-balling us this spring. They're not too freaked about me or the Guru. If they were I would have never been able to get this shot. The mate was just a few feet off to the left when I shot this. I do not have a clue as to whether the rabbit in this picture is the Mr. or the Mrs.

Now, having said that, I'm sure that these rabbits are extremely paranoid of T.C. (Tiger Cat), the B&J shop cat. I say that knowing how many baby rabbits I've seen her prancing about with in the past couple months. And the subsequent barf-o-rama from T.C. of baby rabbit parts that comes afterward..... evidently there's only so much of the hard parts of a rabbit that a cat can cycle through the system. Ugghh.

If you've never heard the haunting and distressed mewling of a rabbit in the grips of a downfall with a dog or a cat, well then I can't really explain it. It is truly not a pretty sound. It sounds kind of like something from a horror movie, except, maybe even worse. T.C. will come strolling through the shop with a still alive trophy baby rabbit in her jaws, doing the mewling distress thing. T.C. will be howling too, and prancing so as to let you know that by God she had got this critter so as to protect you, and man ain't it amazing what an excellent hunter I is?

Anyways, I digress. Br'er rabbit was kind enough today to trust me enough to let me talk to him for a few minutes, and so just then, all was right with the universe.....

After Sam and I getting caught in several scattered thundershowers while trying out a few changes to his DRZ400 this Memorial Day I opted out towards the house to find beautimus weather conditions. I fetched all my wet riding gear out of the cage and me and the scalpel went for a hundred mile fang.

Purely by accident I drifted through and around the sweet little square of our county seat in Charlotte. When I came around the back-side of the courthouse this was the view on the back lawn. I stopped and took off all my gear, and got out the camera. It was a bit surreal, strangely quiet and I was the only one around in the square for the twenty or so minutes that I was there.

Each flag had an aluminum tag hanging from it where it was attached to the pole. The tag was engraved stating who had donated the flag, and in the remembrance of whom, and what branch of the military and what conflict they had served our country during.

When the wind would blow the little tags would tinkle in the quiet like an ethereal wind chime of honor. It was hard to leave, I just kept reading names and wondering about those folks.....

Aroma Therapy

I've heard the term, though I'm not really up on the process. I could Google it I guess, but I'd almost bet that the thinking is that certain smells must trigger certain chemicals in the brain, or maybe sensations, and that is somehow therapeutic. I hear that lavender is a big in the aroma therapy game.

I suppose I've been indulging in a sort of aroma therapy this spring-time. As I blatt about on my two-wheeler it's amazing how much more ethereal the
country-side is. My current favorite aroma is the blooming honey-suckle. Passing a long fence-row of it is akin to just jamming your face into the bushes!

Another strong aroma is wild onions from a freshly mown lawn. Sometimes in traffic you might get a blast from an open car window of a ladies perfume. Or perhaps the smell of cherry tobacco being puffed from the guy in that pick-up truck up front.

Of course with the good, there must come the bad. Any stinking diesel vehicle comes to mind. A hog farm. A "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road", that in a car is a fleeting one or two breath nuisance. But the same dead skunk on your motorbike can be downright asphyxiating.

But I digress.The positive aromas greatly outweigh the negatives. The smell of a rushing river, the dirt of a newly turned and plowed farm field. That scent of freshness just after you've been caught out by a quick spring shower.

Ahh. Two-wheeled spring-time aroma therapy. I just can't recommend it enough.

Report: Saturday Feb. 14th 2009

A couple of weeks ago fellow agents traveled from the ITSA command regiment to gather information about another discipline of our two-wheeled brethren.

Jesco alluded to the mission in a criptive missive during his report HERE. He and Mennonite Mike ventured north of the Mason/Dixon to attend the program of the American Supercamp.

The target of the sortie had been discussed at several ITSA oriented activities. The opportunity for the infiltration fell into the clear window of the week-end of the 7th/8th Feb. 2009, and the weather was cooperative.

Jesco's report seems to read in a positive manner, but it appears that visual info for ITSA to further study of the operation was lacking upon futher revue. There was only the aforementioned (LINK) short burst of low-quality digital footage, and none of the footage includes either of the operatives in action.

But, thanks to the research talents of Peter D (of the far southern-command of ITSA), we have the image posted above of Mennonite Mike during some of his evaluation laps. Depicted in the image is an obviously incognito Mike, and evidently this image was acquired during the portion of the program format that involved some sort of an agricultural vehicle. And, as if concurring the information that the Trialsrooster has stated before, "Everybody needs them some ape-hangers."

For future consideration:

Considering the lack of visual evidence recovered during de-brief, my suggestion would be to that, in the event of further information gathering missions of this manner that to insure more digital footage and better quality visual evidence, is that we send at least one other operative with the original two. Or seven.

In continuing the abscess that is the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), actor Perry King has been appointed to the Association's Board of Directors. Huh? Actor Perry King? WTF?

From a press release by the AMA, it seems that King has been appointed the seat left vacant, "resulting from the departure of former AMA Board Chairman Dal Smilie. Smilie resigned after an AMA internal investigation uncovered evidence of unsubstantiated expense reimbursements to Smilie. King will serve out the remainder of the original term, which extends through February 2010". This is also the same investigation that Jeff Smith's name was attached to.

In other astounding AMA news, "American Motorcyclist Association announces 2008 AMA Motorcyclist of the Year." Just go ahead and try and guess who it is. Maybe Ben Spies for winning his third AMA Superbike title in a row? Or how about Mike and Diane Traynor? They organise and run the Ride For Kids program that supports the efforts of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) to find the cause of and cure for childhood brain tumors.

Nope, quoting from the press release, "The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is proud to announce that Stan Simpson is the 2008 AMA Motorcyclist of the Year. Simpson is the current AMA Board of Directors Chairman." Again, Simpson is the current AMA Board of Directors Chairman!

Rob Dingman (AMA President and CEO) goes on to state in the press release that this really (really!) isn't self-serving.

The second-half, of my first century.
It kicked off, kind of like I think it ought to be.

There was a shot glass, a present from a friend.
And I got a slice of inspiriation from another good freind.

And the news from L.A. about the new-old serial killer. Proving once again that there's still some cave men. It apperars that there's a dumpster involved.

Sam and I came up with this theory. Many of the really pretty show cars had no windshield wipers. We were trying to figure out why? Asthetics? Not mucking up the lines of design? Rusty wiper arms? What we decided was this, if it has no wipers, it's a trailer queen, and not a driver. And that's just lame.

The car show was the GOODGUYS Rod & Custom Association Show at Titans Stadium in Nashville, touted to be twenty-five hundred cars. I do not doubt it. It was almost overwhelming. Sam and I were there from 9 a.m. 'til 5:30 p.m on Saturday. During the last hour-and-a-half we were sitting at the exit of the grounds just watching the parade that was the show cars leaving. There was easily twenty-percent of the cars driving by that we had not seen all day!
