Halloween

Pardon me, but what in the hell is "Trunk or Treat"? That appears to be what all the churches offer, as opposed to "Trick or Treat". I can only guess that "Trick" is a bad word now-a-days.....

And, when did Halloween become all smiley faced pumpkins and ghosts? I thank my lucky stars that I had some cousins that were a few years older than me that were glad as hell to terrorize and scare the ever-loving shit out of me and my little sister.

On a side note, these same cousins had a pet flying squirrel and their mom was cool enough to let 'em keep it in their old victorian house. It would fly from a drapery rod on one side of the room to another drapery rod on the other side of the room. Whoa!

Anyway, Happy Halloween all.....

Channel Surfing.....

Back about a hundred years ago as part of a Junior Achievement project I got to sort of apprenctice as a disc jockey at 1510 WLAC am radio in Nash-Vegas. A real radio station. Matter of fact, the WKRP sit-com could well have been patterned off of that station. There was a drive time hippie wild guy (Bear With the Hair Bradley), and then at dark a cool soul guy took over, mucho akin to Venus Flytrap (Spider Harrison, a.k.a. Spiderman). Now keep in mind that we're talking the mid-seventies. Jeez, I hate dating myself that much. Ah, but what the hell.

This past weekend I got to spend sixteen hours behind the wheel and all the miles were spent on our glorious Interstate system (please read into my sarcasm.....).

As a form of amusement, just to pass the time, I made judicious use of the "SEEK" button on the tuner of my radio. You know, the button that you punch and it scans to the next recieveable station. Every time a song sucked (or turned country) I'd hit "SEEK" and we'd move on to something else, until we found a non-sucking (or non-country) song. Something I could holler with in the privacy of my own vehicle until the next tune sucked.

What really tripped me out was the formulaic non-radio that exists right now. The stations appear to be owned by the conglomerates that own the catalogs of artists, like SONY or VIRGIN or CBS. There are no real disc-jockeys anymore.

While punching the "SEEK" button I'd be changing cities (you know how stations fade as you travel and you have to find a new one?) And then I realised that there was in fact a pattern to their madness. It's all the same. If you're a radio station these days you buy a subscription to a format. And while I was surfing I was able to see the same pattern of tunes, only mixed up by the advertisements of different urban areas, whether it be a real estate agent or car dealers or gutter installers. It was all the same.

But what really tripped me out was the total lack of imagination and the use of naming a station with a tag line that could just as easily be aligined with an under-arm deodorant.....here's just some, and I'm sure I missed a couple.....add them in your comments if you wish.....

Jazz at Razzs'

This past Friday evening I had the good fortune to see my buddy Mel Deal play some jazz with Lloyd Wells at Razzs' in Smyrna. Mel and Lloyd were both "on" Friday night and played some tasty tunes. We had a good crew too, and The Captain got his jazz cherry popped. They played cool enough stuff that even The Capt. later said he recognised a couple of the standard tunes.

Near as I can tell gear-wise, Mel played his gorgeous Gibson ES-150D through a funky hybrid chunk of tweed Fender amp with a 15 inch speaker. Lloyd was sporting his Gibson Super 400 seven-string through which-ever is the biggest Polytone amp.

E Ticket 2

Now there's some plumbing. A nice bit of info about the E-Type Jaguar can be found HERE .

This particular Jaguar E-Type V-12 in our series here was in darn good condition and was not restored.

More to come.....

E Ticket 1

I'm sure if Disney World gave grades to a ride in a car this would in fact be an EEEEE ticket.

Jaguar E-Type V-12.

I can remember the first time I saw an E-Type, it was at the SCCA road races in Gadsden, Alabama at an airport track in the early sixties. To my five year old eyes it did not even look real.

Ground Control to Major Tom.....

This week's Sign of the Week.....

If you've never owned a British sports car then you probably have absolutely no idea what this means.

Hell, even if you have owned a British sports car you still probably don't know what this means.....

More later......

On a weird side note, it appears that Vinny Testaverde is in fact the real thing.....

We're Back.....

We're back from Sam's rookie MGB showing at the 2007 Nashville British Car Club Annual Car Show at Pinkerton Park in Franklin. To say we had a ball would be a major understatement. The weather was absolutely perfect, we met some nice folks and saw some amazing cars

The Tiki Godz

Open-end Wrenches & a Flintlock

I talked to this cat for a while and he had a particularly nasty hatred of open-ended wrenches. They were welded in everywhere, worked into the scheme of his rat-rod idea...

Shifters#6.....Pineapple

Shifters#5.....A Real Harley

A real Harley. Old flat-head engine, suicide clutch and shift, a fitted Mikuni carb with a K&N filter. Sweet.

Shifters#4.....Crystal

A crystal door knob just like my Grandma had all through her house.

Shifters#3.....Gernade

The chain link to the pineapple is cool.....the bungee cord return spring from the dash ain't too bad either!

From the Shadows.....

Sam and his 1973 MGB coupe will make their car show debut at the Nashville British Car Club annual show this next Saturday, October 13th. The event flyer with directions is HERE .

Come on out and hang with us.....It will no doubt be a bit of culture shock from the Redneck Rumble of last week-end.

Shifters#2.....Bayonet

I thought the "No Swimming" sign for a door panel was a particularly nice touch.

Shifters #1.....Piston

This series of shifters and steering wheels could go on forever. As it is, I'll try and limit myself to eight or so combinations.....

Hot Rod

My buddy Rich (a.k.a. Rat Fink, a.k.a. Bubbles), fellow skater, Team Geritol member and all around Goon graced the Redneck Rumble this past week-end with his slice of hot rod sunshine, before riding off into it.

Push.....

Sometimes you just gotta' have a push.....

Sign of the Week

I don't honestly know what was said up top there under the Kawasaki green posterboard. I couldn't tell if it read "PET ABORTION" or "PET ADOPTION". Seriously.

We were in Lebanon so whatever y'all think. Happy Sunday. Seriously.

Redneck Rumble

Sam and I checked out the "Redneck Rumble" hot-rod show at the Ward Agricultural Fairgrounds in Lebanon, Tennessee. Easily the best and most fun of the seven car shows I've attended this year. More of a run what you brung kind of hot-rod show, as opposed to a "classic" muscle car show.

The ideas and creativity of the "rat-rod" contingent (easily 60% of the total show entrants) show a form of ideas that's as visual and functionally divergent as any you've ever seen.

There were some good bikes too. You're probably gonna' be sick of all this shit by Tuesday, but what the hell.

It was good to see Big Al Dente and Miss Sydney.

Rock on.....

Lawn Care & Bait Shop

In the grocery I overheard a woman tell another lady about a business idea she and her husband had. It involved a combintaion Lawn Care and Bait Shop.

I pondered that for a minute there in the bread aisle, lost in indecision between whole wheat or white. Lawn Care slash Bait Shop. Sounded pretty good to me.....

Bitch

Bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch.

That's what this barking squirrel did out back here last evening for a couple of hours. He's usually quite the accrobat running the phone lines back and forth, but he was seriously unhappy yesterday.

Speaking of something that's a bitch, just what the heck is Dario Franchitti thinking?
